A recall issued by the FDA and related to pistachio products in the U.S. has extended beyond the Chicago area to become a nationwide alert.

A number of other companies have joined the recall, including PepsiCo, Kraft Foods and Kroger.
Chip maker Frito-Lay is recalling its 1.75 ounce Frito-Lay brand salted pistachios with sell-by dates between July 14 and December 29, 2009. The UPC code is 0 28400 03888 1.
Kraft is voluntarily recalling Planters and Back to Nature products containing pistachio nuts, with the following UPC codes: 11110 73615 and 1111073615.
All of the alerts are linked to Setton Farms, which has been identified as the source of the contamination.
Yesterday, the FDA, told consumers to avoid eating pistachio products while the investigation is ongoing.
Last month, President Obama called for increased food safety regulations in the U.S. following an outbreak of salmonella from peanuts produced at the Peanut Corporation of America. The contamination was linked to nine deaths.
