A North Carolina fruit and vegetable vendor has announced a nationwide voluntary product safety recall on cartons of cucumbers distributed to wholesalers over the past couple of weeks. The recall follows the discovery by federal inspectors that cucumbers in one such carton were contaminated with the bacteria salmonella.

According to the CNN report, Raleigh-based produce vendor L&M Companies, Inc, has issued a product safety recall on one lot of cucumber cartons, marked with the brand name Nature’s Delight and containing the lot number #PL-RID-002990.

That said, the single lot contained nearly 1,600 cartons of potentially contaminated cucumbers, which were distributed to nine states between March 30 and April 7. The states reportedly affected include Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, New York, Tennessee, Texas, and Wyoming. So far, no instances of illness or infection have been reported in conjunction with the tainted cucumbers. L&M Companies has made the decision to recall the lot of cucumbers in order to minimize any harm that could occur.

“L&M Companies takes food safety seriously, and we are committed to the customers and consumers who buy our products every day. Our farms are third-party, food safety certified, and they follow good agriculture practices,” said representative Lee Anne Oxford in a press release from L&M Companies. "Even though the recalled lot was only directly distributed to a hand full of states, we are issuing this nationwide, voluntary recall to reduce even the slightest risk to public health.”
